Will Chope looking to get back on track against Red Romero
by Joshua Luis Peralta UY
Will “The Kill” Chope will be fighting in his third URCC bout on February 18, 2012 in Baguio City.
Chope is 2-0 in the URCC, winning both his fights by standing guillotine choke. Outside the promotion, he recently suffered a loss against Ev Ting in New Zealand. The Phuket Top Team said in his Facebook account: “I got caught by the overhand right that I told myself to look out for.”
Chope will have less than a month to rest, recuperate, and train for his URCC bout against Red Romero (4-2). Some might be wary of the short period of time between fights, but for Will Chope this is just another day in the office.
In 2011 alone, the 6’4’’ American fought over 20 times across different disciplines. “I fought over 20 times in 2011. Six MMA, two K-1, three Sanda, and over 10 Muay Thai fights,” Chope said. “I love it! I am a fighter. It is what I do. And my goal for 2012 is to have 30 fights this year. Fighting keeps me motivated and I love it.”
Asked about Romero and his punching power, Chope answered, “His punching power is not a big worry of mine. I have fought the WMC Heavy Weight Muay Thai Champ. I promise no one in my weight class hits as hard as that guy! (Laughs.)”
But make no mistake about it: Will Chope is not taking this fight lightly. In his mind, this will be an all-out war that the fans will enjoy. “I imagine it to be a fast, bloody war where we come out at the bell and hit each other until one of us can't stand up anymore. It’s going to be fun!” says Chope. “Romero is a very game fighter and I’m really hoping he will stand and trade blows with me so we can put on a show for the Baguio fans.”
For this fight, Will Chope is relying on his Muay Thai experience and his improved ground game. “My biggest advantage is of course my height, the fact that I’m 6'4'' and cut to Featherweight. But my clinch work and striking skills from my time in Thailand should definitely give me the advantage.” He added, “I guarantee Red will not be taking me down. Mark (Striegl) has been relentless in training and forcing me to improve my takedowns, my ability to stand up, and my ground control.”
Will “The Kill” get back on the winning track? Will he get to display his improved ground game against a very dangerous Red Romero? Or will it be an all-out slugfest as he predicts for this bout? We will have all the answers in URCC Baguio IV: Battleground, live from the Baguio Convention Center in February 18, 2012. Bakbakan na!
