In This Corner: Eduard Folayang
By Alfred Johannes T. Gealogo
I chatted up one of the most respectful yet feared fighters from the Philippines who has been wreaking havoc across South East Asia: Eduard “Landslide” Folayang. The Team Lakay superstar is now a three-time SEA Games Gold medalist, has held the URCC Welterweight title since 2007, and has won all his wars at Martial Combat and One FC.
Last January 13, 2011, Eduard Folayang once again proved his dominance as he emerged victorious over Brazilian Wadson Teixeira in 56 seconds. Folayang’s choice seconds of frenzied ground and pound knocked his opponent unconscious for several minutes!
At 27 years old, one could say that Eduard “Landslide” Folayang has achieved a lot in such a short time. He is one of the first homegrown Filipino fighters (alongside teammate Kevin Belingon) to put Philippine mixed martial arts on the world map with his win at Gorilla Warfare in Saipan, and Martial Combat and One FC, both held in Singapore. I asked Eduard three questions on cementing his legacy as a mixed martial artist here and abroad.
Do you think you’ve already done enough as far as Filipino mixed martial arts is concerned?
I don’t think that I’ve done enough in the Filipino mixed martial arts scene. While I’m still actively fighting, I will always be working towards my dream of making a difference in the sport. Maybe when I’m already retired from fighting and can look back on my career after I’ve decided to hang the gloves up, I could probably say that I have proven enough.
What is your focus now, to have more fights in the Philippines or to wage most of your battles abroad?
I love fighting in the Philippines, in front of our countrymen. It’s something that I would do but I’d like to focus on the bigger ocean of MMA and fighting abroad so that I could show the world how good and talented homegrown Filipino MMA fighters really are. I’d like the world to know that Filipino MMA fighters can compete and dominate even outside our country.
What can you say about the opinion of some that your overall MMA game, as impressive as it is, really hasn’t grown as much as it should?
About my overall game, well I could personally and honestly tell you that there is a lot about my MMA game that I would like to improve on. Hopefully in the future I would be excellent in all areas of the game. Right now, I see myself as a little child that’s still growing in this sport of MMA. I pray and believe that one day I will be one of the best as I journey in this field with my Lord Jesus.
