Eustaquio showed an impressive performance on his debut against Rogelio Plomeda last August 20, 2011. He dismantled Plomeda in the second round by throwing heavy leg kicks that caused Plomeda to hit the canvas, forcing him to yield to give Eustaquio the TKO victory.

Eustaquio then fought against Korean Top Team's David Cho on November 26, 2011. After three rounds of action, the judges gave a split decision victory to the Korean fighter, leaving Eustaquio and the crowd some doubt with the outcome of the fight.

“My last fight was an all striking showdown for me. Though I went for take downs, I haven't shown the crowd my ground skills. I just followed the game plan that night,” says Eustaquio.

After that controversial loss to Cho, Eustaquio is now ready to face a new challenge in his MMA career. He will be making his One FC debut on February 11 in Jakarta, Indonesia against Evolve MMA's Alex Silva.

We sat down with Geje to discuss his upcoming fight in the second major event of the URCC-partnered, Singapore-based MMA promotion.

Zike: For MMA fans who will watch you for the first time on February 11, can you talk a bit about your martial arts background and your fighting style?

Geje: I kick, I punch, I wrestle, and I do grounds. That's who I am.

Zike: You are fighting against a very dangerous BJJ black belt, Alex Silva. Give us your thoughts on your next opponent.

Geje: Alex Silva is a great guy. It is an honor for me to fight a Brazilian warrior.

Zike: Can you tell us something about your preparations going to this fight against Silva?

Geje: I am with the best MMA team in the Philippines, so expect that I’m going through the best training right now.

Zike: What holes do you see in Silva's game?

Geje: His stand-up game.

Zike: How does it feel fighting under the One FC banner?

Geje: Feels like you belong with the champions. Being a part of One FC and fighting on their second event is such an honor.

Zike: Your last fight was quite controversial. Some fight fans believe that you won that fight against David Cho, but unfortunately the judges didn't give you the decision win. Can you give us your thoughts on that?

Geje: I believe that I got the first round. The second round was a little bit close, but the referee gave David Cho a one-point deduction. [Winning] Those two rounds show that I won. Nothing personal for me this time, the judges saw it that way so I give all the respect to their decision. God didn't give me that opportunity because I believe He has a better one.

Zike: What did you learn in your fight against David Cho? Did you see any holes in your game that you need to improve on?

Geje: Of course, there are things that needs to be improved. With regards to my fight against David, yes, there are some parts of my game that need to be improved. No one’s a perfect fighter.

Zike: What's your ultimate goal for your MMA career?

Geje: To be a champion.

Zike: We all know that all fighters have a busy schedule, but for sure there are things you love outside the gym. What does Geje Eustaquio do in his free time?

Geje: I love watching TV, rest at home, and visit some of my friends.

Zike: Any people you want to thank?

Geje: First of all, I want to thank God and my teammates, most especially to our coach Mark Sangiao.

Mark Februrary 18, 2012 as the URCC invades Baguio for their 4th event up North! Billed as Colt 45 URCC Baguio 4: Battleground, the event will be held at the Baguio Convention Center.

 Headlining the card is the URCC Pinweight champion Roy “The Punisher” Docyogen (9-0-0) against former WBC titleholder Rodel “Kid” Orais (2-0) in a Superfight. In his two professional MMA fights, Orais punched a tough Jilmar Tangayan to submission and defeated a Lakay fighter in Joel Amurao. Could Roy Docyogen be the next Lakay member in his list?

 In a title bout, Davao’s Beefit Python’s fighter and Featherweight interim champion Ricardo “El Matador” Sapno (4-1-0) engages Kalinga Wushu Team’s Arnold Agapito (1-0) for the vacant URCC Featherweight belt. A statement from URCC President Alvin Aguilar will be released soon to explain the reason for Eric “The Natural” Kelly relinquishing his title.

 A personal favorite from the recent Black Tie Brawl will be battling once more as heavy-handed Melchor Cases from Strikes Unlimited (1-0) goes against Christian Gazmin for the co-main event. Gazmin, a decorated grappler coming out of Engage MMA, is making his professional debut. Will he slug it out against Cases or go to his bread-and-butter for a classic match of power v. technique?

 My pick for potential Fight of the Night honors goes to now Baguio-based Will “The Kill” Chope of Phuket Top Team and Supefight winner Red “The Filipino Bolo Punch” Romero from Yaw Yawn Kampilan. Will Chope (URCC record 2-0) is enjoying a meteoric rise to fame as he submitted two of his opponents in the Philippines. Red Romero recently lost to Ricardo Sapno as he took the fight two weeks after a brutal war with Jessie Rafols. With time to recuperate and train for this fight, expect Red to go all out! This is a very interesting fight that I think should be higher in the card.

 A Muay Thai fan’s dream match has been scrapped as Jerson Estoro’s opponent, Onyok Transmonte, suffered a shoulder injury while training. URCC matchmaker Willy Carlos gives his assurance that the guy who will replace Transmonte will be just as exciting and explosive on his feet.

On the same day as URCC’s first event for 2012, we were grieved with the news of a former URCC fighter’s untimely demise.

Robinson Dalupan, head instructor of a Filipino martial art called Herpestes, passed away last Friday after an infection from his neck went up to the brain, prematurely ending his life.

Called Master by his students and DJ BullDawg by hip-hop fanatics in Manila, Robinson fought as a Heavyweight in the URCC wherein he lost a war against former URCC behemoth Phil Bryner. After getting knocked out during their URCC 5 bout, he concentrated on learning and eventually teaching Herpestes and became active in the Philippine hip-hop scene.

Sources say that Robinson was on the receiving end of a neck strike during a demonstration, not connected in any way to the URCC. After getting hit in the neck, he contracted an infection that eventually crept to his brain.

Our condolences to the family of Robinson Dalupan. And to all martial artists, we are again reminded to protect ourselves at all times.

Match 1: Featherweight
Samuel Estandarti (Ilo-Ilo Fighting Alliance) vs Alde De Soza (Bullet Fighting System)

De Soza made quick work of Estandarti, winning in 23 seconds of the first round by tapout. De Soza rocked his opponent with some hard shots before following him to the ground for some vicious ground and pound.

Match 2: Lightweight
Hans Lamanilao (Butuan Extreme MMA) vs Vaughn Donayre (Deftac Cebu)

Both fighters went guns ablazing from the get-go. Lamanilao tries to go for a guillotine. Donayre trades punches while mounting Lamanilao. More than fifty unanswered punches by Donayre! Lamanilao dismounts but Donayre successfully takes him down again. Donayre throws double hammer fists. Referee stops the bout at 3:31 in the first round.

Match 3: Flyweight
Roel Rusaro (Yaw-Yan Ardigma Cebu) vs Arnel Ylanan (Bullet Fighting System)

Both start out trading kicks. Rusauro takes down Ylanan and tries for a full mount. Ylanan reverses, but Rusauo gets out of it. Rusauro back on top.  Referee restarts the fight. Rusauro back on top again. After not much action between the two, they get restarted in the middle again, this time in the same position. Still no action, third restart now. Rusauro leads with leg kicks and takes down Ylanan again. Fourth restart. Rusauro connects with a MASSIVE backfist and knocks out Ylanan in 9:43 in the first round!

Match 4: Featherweight
Urtych Alarin (Butuan Extreme MMA) vs Jimmy Yabo (Seldef MMA)

Another quick one: Yabo connects with a THUMPING right hook to the face and Alarin goes down! Yabo wins by KO in 24 seconds!!!

Match 5: Pinweight
Jonathan Sumogat (Cenojas MMA) vs Renan Noble Franca (Yaw-Yan Ardigma)

Sumogat catches a kick from Noble Franca and takes him down. Noble Franca attempts a choke. Sumogat successfuly maintains side mount, throwing elbows and body punches, and finally submitting Noble Franca via Kimura.

Match 6: VISAYAN PINWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Geronimo "El Matador" Etac (Yaw-Yan Ardigma) vs Victor "Gladiator" Torre [champion] (Deftac Bacolod)

Etac leads with a leg kick. Torre responds with knees to the body. Both fighters exchange punches. Torre takes down Etac; they get restarted in the middle. Etac lands a pair of leg kicks, but Torre is able to bring Etac to the ground and goes for a full mount. Etac escapes and goes for GNP. Torre goes for an arm bar. Victor Torre still the Visayan Pinweight Champion by tapout via armbar submission in the 6:16 mark of the first round!

Match 7: VISAYAN BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Carry Bullos (Seldef MMA) vs Rex De Lara [champion] (Tinagan Warriors Ilo-Ilo)

Bullos attempts a take down and gets reversed by De Lara. Bullos goes for a massive take down. De Lara goes for foot stomps while backing Bullos into the corner. De Lara goes for GNP while on a full mount and follows through by getting his back and attempts a rear naked choke. We now have a standing match as Bullos escapes. And another take down by De Lara. Bullos has De Lara in a guard on the ground but Rex manages to free himself. They get positioned in the center. 

We now go to the second round for the first time tonight! De Lara charges in with punches and foot stomps. Bullos goes for a guillotine. Carry Bullos takes the Visayan Bantamweight Championship in the 0:40 mark in the second round by tapout via guillotine choke! The crowd goes wild as their favorite son WINS!

Match 8: SUPERFIGHT
Wadson Teixeira (Legacy Gym Thailand) vs Eduard Folayang (Lakay Wushu)

Eduard leads with a leg kick. Wadson returns fire with a good combination. Eduard gets hit with a hook and is taken down, but Eduard manages to recover and move to side mount over Wadson. Eduard goes for GNP. NASTY elbows! Eduard "The Landslide" Folayang wins via tap out in 56 seconds of the first round!!!

I'll go for Jose Aldo. His vicious strikes especially his low kicks are relentless, and he’s got good takedown defense. It won't be an easy fight though. Ibang klase ang mga take down ni Mendes eh. Ginagawa niyang pang counter sa strikes ang take downs niya.
I’m calling it Jose Aldo by decision.

Vitor Belfort KO’s Anthony Johnson

Johnson loves to rumble. Belfort can handle this kind of fighter easily. Timing and accuracy in strikes are the best weapons to beat Belfort. I don't see that in Johnson. Belfort is a tough nut when it comes to the ground. Belfort for a KO.

Rousimar Palhares taps Mike Massenzio

They fight with the same [style] kaya lang mas mabilis si Palhares. They both love take downs but Palhares' take downs are quicker and stronger. Palhares’ strikes are also crisper. I'll go for Palhares. Ang galing maghanap ng ankle or leg submissions.

On paper, Eduard Folayang (10-1) is the heavy favorite over 3-2 Wadson Teixeira. “The Landslide” is riding a five-fight win streak against some of the best martial artists around the Asian circuit. He also won a gold medal in Wushu at the Southeast Asian Games the past year. Considering the international popularity of Folayang, MMA sites have gone as far as to say that a Teixeira victory would be a major upset.

Everyone can ready their piñata and anticipate the raising of Folayang’s arms in jubilant celebration, except (hardcore fans, don’t kill me for this) a win by Wadson “Knockout” Teixeira isn’t too remote a possibility. While having an overall MMA record of 3-2, his last defeat was in 2006. Teixeira’s record after joining Nova União – the same team that produced former two-division UFC champion BJ Penn and reigning UFC Featherweight champ Jose Aldo – is a solid 2-0. He even won his last fight in 2010 via submission due to an armbar! To say, the impressive Muay Thai fighter with the alias “Knockout” has evolved to include a BJJ brown belt to his arsenal.

In this article, we look at Folayang’s keys to victory in his upcoming match against Wadson Teixeira.

Swim to deep waters. Time and again, “The Landslide” has emerged victorious because of his stamina and unrelenting spirit. Credit it to training in high altitude, Folayang battles full-paced to exploit an opening from an opponent for a stoppage or go the distance for a decision victory. With two 10-minute rounds, Folayang can drown Teixeira and go full throttle when Teixeira starts to show signs of fatigue. In addition, the longer the fight goes, the sweatier both men will be, the less likely Folayang will be in danger of a submission from the BJJ brown belt.

Takedown transitions to side mount. Folayang has previously fought an equally if not more dangerous striker in Vuyisile Colossa. In that fight, Folayang repeatedly took Colossa down, content to land in Colossa’s guard and begin his ground and pound. “The Landslide” cannot be as complacent this time around! Any BJJ practitioner knows that you’re actually at a disadvantage when you’re in an opponent’s closed guard. Especially when your opponent is a BJJ brown belt, he can execute all sorts of submissions and sweeps to turn your minor victory (getting him to the ground) into a dire situation. If Folayang wishes to go for a takedown, he needs to try and land in side mount. Successful double-leg takedowns will do the trick. But in case he lands in a guard, he cannot waste time. However he can, he has to transition to side mount. Then he can start assaulting Teixeira with GNP.

Land combinations and leg kicks. Wushu fighters are known for the range of attacks they can execute. In his fight against A Sol Kwon, Folayang used left-right blitzkriegs to move to the clinch. On the other hand, his body kicks were often caught by the Korean which resulted to counters. “The Landslide” has to pick his attacks. Rather than singular power strikes, he has to utilize his jab and chain his attacks when Teixeira is in range. Folayang has power in his hands, but they’re not dynamite (that or A Sol Kwon just has titanium for his chin!). He has to choose the striking battles he gets into with a man who has a penchant for knocking people out.

If Folayang wishes to engage with kicks, swift kicks to Teixeira’s legs would pay the most dividends in the long run. Aside from minimizing the probability of being taken down (vis-à-vis body kicks), repeated attacks to Teixeira’s legs can minimize the power of his strikes especially as the fight progresses. Then again, it’s best for Folayang to throw kicks in combination compared to single shots against Teixeira.

A time to move back. Folayang’s warrior spirit is at times a bane as it is a boon. He is notorious for trading blows with his opponents, and half the time he has come off it on the losing end. Especially since Teixeira is a dangerous striker with an equally dangerous ground game, Folayang cannot just stand in front of Teixeira or go for just any takedown. He has to pick his spots and move back, circle around to get into an advantageous position. He has to move out of danger; that danger is in the form of Wadson Teixeira being comfortable in a face-to-face Muay Thai-conducive exchange.

Biggest Loser: After a grueling war of attrition in a superfight against Jessie Rafols last URCC XX (which was a week ago, I think) wherein he outlasted Rafols in a crazy sequence of takedowns, reversals and ground and pound to get the superfight belt, Red Romero may now be the owner of the record for the shortest time a fighter has held a belt. Ricardo Sapno of Beefit’s Python Gym from Davao took everything Romero had to throw and overpowered him with takedowns that seemed to gas-out Romero. The beginning of the second round was virtually an episode of “The Walking Dead” if they ever featured two zombies in an MMA fight. Romero could have won it all when he caught Sapno in a triangle armbar where he was able to land some heavy hammer fists. Sapno was able to get out of it but you could see the punishment he took as his face became swollen and bruised. Romero would later on launch a barrage causing the mouthpiece of Sapno to fly out but after the ref decided to let Sapno put on his mouthpiece, a very drained Romero collapsed in the ring and the fight was waived off with Sapno now the interim featherweight champion. If only Eric Kelly knew the ramifications of pulling out of this match would cause…

Red Romero is a great fighter with the heart and skill to be champion, which I think he will be, but a week’s rest after a war like the one he had against Rafols is not enough for his body to recuperate. The guidelines for medical suspensions, even for winners, need to be reviewed and applied to avoid this kind of career shortening instances.  With both of them now suffering mirror defeats, a rematch with Jessie Rafols seems logical.

Biggest Winner: Guess who’s back on the winning track? Alvin Ramirez made short work of the very game Mark Dialogo who gave “The Phenom” a couple of good shots when he had Ramirez on the ground. Alvin opened up the match with a quick headkick followed up with a right hand but before the fight ended one could argue that Dialogo was the more accurate of the two with his strikes. He was catching Ramirez with counter punches and turning back kicks. After forcing Ramirez to the ground, he landed some hard punches and elbows and looked to be in control of the fight. Making the mistake of letting Ramirez up, the fight ended when Ramirez caught him with a head kick during an exchange and followed up with a barrage of punches from the top that put Dialogo away for good.

Ramirez is talented, no doubt about it. Only a few fighters can excite the way he does and even fewer fighters can still have their credibility at sky-high after taking as much losses as Alvin Ramirez has. The key for him to win it all is to truly train hard. Such talent could also be a cause for mediocrity in the gym. If he dedicates himself to training the way he should, sky is the limit for this guy. I’d like to see him get a few more wins before he gets a crack at the belt for a third time.

Fighter of the Night: I love underdogs. I especially root for them when they’re fighting opponents who look like bullies who could just railroad them in an instant. Of course it’s better when they win. Oddly enough, Melchor Cases should’ve been the favorite as he has a 1-0 record as a pro, but his opponent Mitch Malii who was a bit old to debut for an MMA bout was cheered on by the majority of the crowd (mostly foreigners) and was clearly the favorite to win. Malii came out looking mean with his gameface on and his awesome tattoo that stretched from his chest to his back matched with an equally awesome entrance song. He reminded me of a the guy back in URCC II who emulated Wanderlei Silva during a staredown before a fight (clue: wanderlei silva-like person lost). Mean and scary. But then, you still have to fight the fight and Melchor Cases did fight catching Malii with frequent Jab-Straight combos. Malii retaliated with some Jab-Straight-Turning long-Backfist which hit nothing but air. Cases also dominated on the ground with his takedowns and before the fight ended, Malii was already a bloody mess. They would continue to battle on the ground until Malii got caught in a guillotine resulting in a tapout.

With better conditioning and consistent training, Melchor Cases could be a contender in the 185 lbs. division. He looks to have some disciplined strikes and good takedowns. With heavyweight champ Igor Subora in his corner, he can easily simulate fights against bigger guys.  A fight with Chris Luna looks interesting.

Watch out for: Keiff Mangusan could be a force in the bantamweight decision. With a record of 2 wins and no losses, it cold be a bit premature to rate him in the stacked bantamweight division but with what he showed in his match against Rendel Camensi of Deftac Dumaguete, his future looks promising. In a show of strength and force of will, Mangusan held onto a choke that shouldn’t have worked. Even when he was on his back and his opponent on top of him in side-control, Mangusan did not let go eventually got the back of Camensi where he finished the fight with a rear naked choke.

I hope that he is developed properly and not rushed into a title shot. Mangusan has the skill set, build and strength to be a promising prospect to fight internationally.
Let him mature a bit more as a fighter. I’m sure fight fans are gonna love to see him crack some heads before he fights for the belt.

Shout outs to:  Will Chope is fought for the 2nd time in two weeks and got his 2nd tapout win due to a Guillotine. All I can see for “The Kill” are exciting fights. Keep up the wins! Mario Sismundo, man you look like Manny Pacquiao. Congratulations on finishing your opponent.

SUPERFIGHT: Red "The Filipino Bolo Punch" Romero VS Jessie "The Finisher" Rafols

The final match and main event of the evening was the Superfight, with two of the promotion’s finest combatants at 139 pounds. In the blue corner:  The Filipino Bolo Punch, Red Romero of Yaw Yan Kampilan. In the red corner: The Finisher, Jessie Rafols of D’Elements Gym. In a fight where anything could happen, it seemed like everything happened. Romero seemed to want to take things slow, keep the distance and at his own pace. This changed in a blink when Rafols caught the Filipino Bolo Punch with a low kick, knocking him down. The Finisher dove at Romero, forcing the blue corner into quickly switching around to keep from getting choked or giving the better position. Rafols pushed relentlessly, content with just smashing and slamming every chance he could get, keeping Romero constantly on defense. It was takedown after takedown, sweep after sweep – the advantage swayed constantly for more than five minutes of groundwork. It finally rested in Romero’s favor, where he finally mounted Rafols and poured nonstop waves of the heaviest fists of the evening, forcing the red corner into submission at 5:27.
